The European Commission's Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Initiative is offering €71.3 million ($100 million) for projects designed to accelerate the introduction of hydrogen fuel cells into the marketplace, including an estimated €25.9 million for stationary power generation and combined heat and power.
"While significant funds have been invested in research and development in this sector, coordination between the relevant industrial sectors, as well as between national and European programs, is limited," according to the funding announcement, which noted the initiative "aims to define and implement a target-oriented research and development program to support the broad market introduction of these technologies."
The goal is to "speed up the development of hydrogen supply and fuel cell technologies with up to five years to the point of commercial take-off," program officials said.
Applications must be received by October 15, and evaluations are expected two months after. The commission plans to begin negotiations for proposals on its short list in February or March 2010. More information on the initiative (FCH-JU-2009-1) is available on the Web at http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ (click on "Find a Call," then look under "Joint Technology Initiatives").
